After nearly 40 years, Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise slips back into the cockpit of a jet fighter for a legacy sequel Top Gun: Maverick† The reviews for the highly anticipated follow-up are now in and it sounds like Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski have made a blockbuster hit and rekindled the love for cinema and movie stars.
We start with Ian Freer of Empire Magazine, who awarded Top Gun: Maverick a perfect score of 5/5, praising the legacy sequel’s approach to the franchise all these years later.
Avoiding the peril of mere renewal, Kosinski and co deliver all the Top Gun vibes and then some: slick visuals, crew camaraderie, thrilling aerial action, a surprising emotional blow and, in Tom Cruise, a magnetic movie star performance as reassuring as a old leather jacket. Punching in the air is mandatory.”
The overwhelming positivity continues with Joblo’s Chris Bumbray, who gave and described the film an incredibly impressive 9/10 Top Gun: Maverick as “a thrilling ride of the highest order” guaranteed to please fans of the original.
“As a lifelong Top Gun fan, I was not disappointed. I will be seeing this at least one more time on the big screen, and if you care about the spectacle of cinema then this is a must see.”
MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman also praised the film highly.
I would pay to see this movie multiple times. It embodies the awe of going to the movies. It has to be seen on the biggest screen with the best sound system. Lightning strikes twice for Tom Cruise. He gains a new generation of fans with a return to patriotic fervor. Top Gun: Maverick hits the summer box office with a sonic boom.
Collider’s Ross Bonaime gave the film a perfect ‘A’ grade, saying the film “definitely deserves all the tremendous praise” it can get. He directed cheers and applause at Tom Cruise, whose performance he calls “one of his best”, even claiming that: Top Gun: Maverick “improves over the original.”
“It’s also hard not to say that this has arguably one of the most exciting action sequences ever to hit the air, and Cruise gives one of his best performances by returning to the role that made him a star. Top Gun: Maverick is a marvel of a movie, one that really takes your breath away.”
According to critics, Top Gun: Maverick is not only the return of the 80s franchise, it is also a warm reminder of making old-school blockbuster movies. Variety’s Peter Debruge praises the film for reminding us of the impact of movie stars, concluding that audiences “need Maverick now more than ever.”
“Yet this buckle-up follow-up also shows why we need movie stars. It goes way beyond Cruise’s rah-rah involvement in what amounts to a glorified US military recruiting commercial (the 1986 film may have been calibrated as perfectly as a Swiss watch, but it wasn’t subtle about his GI Joe agenda). It’s the way we identify with the man when he does what most of us thought was impossible. It turns out we need Maverick now more than ever.”
Matt Donatio of IGN was equally enamored with the way: Top Gun: Maverick builds on its predecessor and delivers heart-pounding action by saying, “Maverick is back to his old tricks in Top Gun: Maverick, flying higher as a sequel that delivers spectacular action with an afterburner.” While THR’s David Rooney once again garnered praise for lead Tom Cruise and his obvious dedication, saying, “No one will dispute that he works hard in this film and justifies the labor of love. But no one will come out too concerned with his self-esteem.” .”
