It’s only going to be one more season and ready Naomi at the CW. Per TVLine, the network has pulled the plug on the DC series. The reason for this seems to be a sharp decline in viewing figures since the start of the season in January. Ratings were initially strong, but reportedly dropped by more than 40% when the series rolled out its first season episodes. The news comes just after the season finale, which now serves as the series finale, which premiered on The CW on May 10.
Naomi getting the boot is just one of the many shakeups going on at The CW. batwoman was recently canceled after three seasons while DC’s Legends of Tomorrow was also scrapped after a seven-season run. Naomi’s cancellation comes with the end of The CW Dynasty† charmed† 4400† In the darkand Roswell, New Mexico† Rumors of a sale would also be a possible reason for the cancellation of so many shows.
Avan DuVernay and Jill Blankenship developed Naomi for The CW with the series based on the comic book by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell. Kaci Walfall starred as Naomi McDuffle, a comic book enthusiast and Superman-obsessed teen who discovers she has superpowers of her own. The series also starred Cranston Johnson, Alexander Wraith, Mary-Charles Jones, Mouzam Makkar, Daniel Puig, Camila Moreno and Barry Watson.
Series star Kaci Walfall hoped for a revamp to further explore all of the characters’ storylines
Kaci Walfall was looking forward to further exploring the titular character in a second season of Naomi† She wasn’t supposed to, but prior to the cancellation news, she did say what she hoped to see in Season 2. She looked to the comic books for inspiration about a possible storyline involving a therapist. Walfall also hoped to learn more about the other characters in the series. In April she said: Comics Beat†
“Season 2 of the comic book just came out, and she’s back with her therapist. So I’d love to see her, you know, give herself more grace. Maybe you have a therapist or something. But I think it’s important for all the characters to honor themselves I think you see that individually by the end of the season I love going into the other characters’ stories as much as Naomi’s Learning about Dee’s past and learning about how Annabelle thinks about herself, and learning more about her life is very important. I’d like to see the characters in the show give themselves more grace.”
Fans will instead have to stick with the comic book adaptation to learn more about the Naomi story. There is always a chance that the show will be picked up from a streaming service for new episodes, but with other CW shows also getting the axe, even with longer runs, Naomi will likely reach the end of its path with this cancellation.
