Elizabeth Olsen is the younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, as many people know, some already in WandaVision. In addition to gaining insight into the industry from a young age, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) star also gained role models in the arts to become a globally recognized celebrity. One of the rules that Mary-Kate and Ashley passed on is that “‘No’ is a full sentence.”
“The word ‘No’ was specifically something I remember my sisters being isolated and it became really empowering. And for women, it’s a very powerful word. People say ‘Just say no to drugs’, but really, you can just say no whenever you want! It’s a really powerful thing.” Olsen said to glamour last year. “I’ve always felt like I could say ‘no’ in any work situation – if someone made me feel uncomfortable – and I just feel like that’s what we need. We don’t have to follow if it doesn’t feel right. We have to listen to our gut.”
That’s why Olsen doesn’t hesitate to turn down anything she doesn’t want to do, like being a host on stage shows like the Emmys or Oscars. According to Olsen, she’s tried that in the past and didn’t like it, so she decided that presenting wasn’t worth the fainting feeling she’s doing. In the past, Olsen has spoken of her struggles with anxiety and panic attacks, such as how that was related to: WandaVision tackles a mental health story by incorporating humor.
Elizabeth Olsen sometimes took her sisters’ advice
During an interview with The IndependentOlsen also explained that the way she’s adopted her sister’s “No” mantra has changed over the years. When she was younger, she used it more like a young woman ready for an aggressor. “I’ve always been so tough – maybe sometimes with a flaw. I just think maybe I could have massaged things a little differently, or maybe I could have had some nuance. But I do think it’s important for a young woman to know, hear, or empower herself.”
Of course, there were times when she didn’t always follow their advice. When she was younger, most of the things they said to her were things she wouldn’t do because she took on an attitude of, ‘I’m going to do it myself! You can’t tell me!’.” Then she’d find out they were right, and eventually she’d do what they told her to do in the first place.
“I think my sisters are some of the most amazing people to watch, with what they’ve created for themselves and how they behave,” Olsen said, showing an air of pride. “I’m really in awe of what they’ve built, and I think it was because they had such a healthy perspective — and I could only take advantage of that healthy perspective. I think it shaped how I behave.”
