In the Rajasthan Royals defeat to Delhi Capitals on Wednesday, Sanju Samson came in as batter at number 5, with Ravichandran Ashwin and Devdutt Padikkal promoted over their skipper. While both Ashwin (50) and Padikkal (48) were strong contributors, Samson was out of only 6 of four deliveries when he tried to clear the ropes but found the fielder in the deep end at Anrich Nortje’s bowling. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was displeased with the Royals’ tactics and blamed Samson’s batting position on the fact that he hadn’t played influential innings.

“He can be (dangerous), but he didn’t help himself by coming to beat the order. If your number 4 is number 4 or number 3 in bat, take the responsibility,” Gavaskar said on comment after the dismissal from Samson.

“Such a big game, such a crucial game. Now look what happened,” he said.

“Suddenly he finds that because they haven’t quite got the start they wanted, he has to start playing the shots from scratch. And in that attempt, he died,” explained the legendary batter.

Promoted to No. 3, Ashwin hit his first T20 half-century in his 38-ball knock, while Padikkal hit a quickfire 48 from 30 deliveries to help the Royals place 160/6 after being charged.
In response, DC opener Srikar Bharat lost from their chase in the first over. But then it became the Australian show, as Mitchell Marsh and David Warner entered into a match-winning 143-run partnership to take the game away from the Royals.

Marsh shot 89 from just 62 deliveries, while Warner went unbeaten on 52 from 41 deliveries as DC chased the 161-run target with 11 deliveries left.
