WARNING: This story contains IMPORTANT SPOILERS for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
The New Marvel Sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness brought some pretty big surprises when it hit theaters this month, and Daniel Craig was reportedly nearly among them. As expected, many main characters were introduced, including a special appearance by the Illuminati. Fans knew about Patrick Stewart’s return as Professor X going into the movie as it was revealed in the previously released trailers, but there were other surprises that were saved for the big screen.
One of the biggest reveals was John Krasinski as Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four. This was a great moment for so many fans, as Krasinski has long been a favorite actor that people hoped for the role in the Fantastic four reboot for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, there are rumors that Krasinski wasn’t the only actor up for this special cameo.
According to Deadline’s Justin Kroll, Krasinski’s Mister Fantastic was “not the first choice” for the Illuminati special cameo. Kroll also claims that James Bond actor Daniel Craig was originally supposed to appear in that spot. Kroll argues that Craig planned to shoot until a surge in COVID cases prompted him to reconsider, so he withdrew to avoid the risk of spreading the disease to his family.
An additional rumor published by the direct claims that Craig would not have played Mister Fantastic, but rather another member of the Illuminati in those scenes. Reportedly, this would have been Balder the Brave, the brother of Thor (Chris Hemsworth). Rumor has it that Craig who backed out had creatives who removed Balder from the story altogether and replaced him with Krasinksi’s Reed Richards. So far, none of this has been officially confirmed by anyone involved.
Will Daniel Craig join the MCU?
If the rumors are true, it would indicate Daniel Craig is interested in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even if the Balder cameo didn’t work for Doctor Strange 2† He will have time to join the franchise after his departure from the James Bond series. A popular character that has been suggested a lot for Craig is the supervillain Magneto, and with the arrival of the X-Men in the MCU on the horizon, that character needs a good actor to bring him to life quickly. Fan art has even been created to depict him in the role.
Maybe it’s only a matter of time before Craig makes his way into the MCU. For now, fans can look forward to him returning to his popular role as Benoit Blanc in Knives from 2one of the two sequels to Blades off which is currently in the works at Netflix. Knives from 2 is expected to premiere on the streamer later this year.
