Maverick Return to Reuniting With a ‘Long-Lost Friend’

Val Kilmer recently spoke about the Top Gun franchise and his return as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, which was a great experience.

For a long time it was uncertain whether Val Kilmer would come back Top Gun: Maverick, but as revealed in the recent trailer and confirmed in an interview with the film’s director and lead actor Tom Cruise, Kilmer will reprise his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the summer blockbuster. In a new interview, Kilmer herself discussed what it was like to get back into the role after such a long time, and now it felt like I was reacquainted with a good friend.

Top Gun: Maverick is a very late sequel to the iconic 80s movie Top Gun, and seems to be forever headed to movie theaters thanks to constant delays due to the Covid pandemic. While the film sees the return of Tom Cruise and Kilmer in their original roles, the cast is mostly new characters and everything revolves around the next chapter of the franchise rather than going back to what happened before. In the storyline, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is recruited to train a group of special pilots to prepare them for a mission. While Maverick’s reputation precedes him, and he’s clearly not a favorite of anyone he works with, his nomination to the role all seems to be thanks to Kilmer’s Kazansky.

While speaking with People, Val Kilmer spoke emotionally about his return to the franchise and how much fun it was to return to the character. Given Kilmer’s reluctance to take the part in the original film, the film’s impact on him is evident in the fact that he lobbied for the return of Iceman in the sequel – the only original character to appear alongside Cruise’s Maverick. He likened the experience to “being reunited with a long-lost friend” and noted that “the characters never really disappear. They live on in the freezer. If you’ll forgive the pun.”

Val Kilmer says the cast camaraderie made Top Gun special.

While Val Kilmer doesn’t reveal anything about how his character appears in Top Gun: Maverick, he reminisced about what he remembered most about working on the original Top Gun And what fun we had while filming. He said:

“My greatest joy was the camaraderie of the cast, [producers] Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, along with the incredible, unflappable enthusiasm of Tony Scott and Tom Cruise. My crew was Rick Rossovich [who played “Slider”]the funniest strongman in show business at the time, and Barry Tubb [“Wolfman”]… Oh, we all laughed until we fell into the hot, spiked crabgrass of the Holiday Inn in San Diego.’

So far, early reviews of Top Gun: Maverick were mostly positive, with some calling the film even better than its predecessor. With Tom Cruise as one of the industry’s most dedicated actors when it comes to performing his own stunts, the action side of the movie was always expected to deliver all the aerial action fans expect, but it seems the storyline is everything as captivating and tells an emotional story that was not really expected.

Top Gun: Maverick zooms in on theaters on May 27.
