Before WandaVisionit was pretty obvious which superheroes were the faces of the Marvel Cinematic Universe† Steve Rogers and Tony Stark were the leaders of the Avengers and the MCU. In fact, the two had the most screen time of any of the characters in the Infinity Saga. While Iron Man started the franchise, Captain America was the first Avenger and was also the focus of the final scene in Avengers: Endgame† Fast-forward to phase four, the MCU is in a new position where there was no clear leader.
similar to how The living Dead hasn’t used any character to replace Rick Grimes, it seems Marvel Studios hasn’t chosen anyone to just be the new face of the MCU. However, several returning characters from the Infinity Saga have since taken on more prominent roles. Phase four of the MCU has introduced new faces such as Moon Knight, Kate Bishop and Shang-Chi, but they are too new to be considered the leaders of the MCU. Here are some of the Marvel superheroes who could be considered the new leader of the MCU.
Some Marvel fans think Spider-Man has become Iron Man’s replacement, but that’s not entirely true. The second film in Tom Holland’s trilogy, Spider-Man: Far From Home, determined that Peter Parker will never be Iron Man. In addition, it has already been confirmed that Riri Williams will be hosting her own television series, iron heart† In Marvel Comics, Williams was a genius inventor who designed her own Iron Man armor and became a superhero. Spider-Man was not connected to Tony Stark’s legacy, so he was never going to be Iron Man’s successor.
In connection Avengers: Endgame† Spider-Man: No Way Home became the highest-grossing film after the end of the Infinity Saga. Spider-Man has certainly been one of the most beloved superheroes, but he has never been the main leader of the MCU. Fans will remember the time in 2019 when the talks between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios fell apart, and for a time Spider-Man left the MCU. A new deal was eventually struck that would allow Spider-Man to remain in the MCU, but Sony has retained the film rights, preventing Marvel Studios from fully treating Spider-Man as their own. It is highly unlikely that Spider-Man will be promoted as the main face of the MCU, with the universe of morbius and venom already called “Sony’s Spider-Man Universe”.
Captain America (Sam Wilson)
At the end of Avengers: EndgameSteve Rogers passed on Captain America’s shield and cloak to Sam Wilson. However, it lasted until the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that Wilson fully embraced being the new Captain America. Because Steve Rogers’ Captain America might just be the… protagonist of the MCU, you might assume that Sam Wilson has taken over that role. But even though Wilson has become Captain America, he is still a different person with his own identity. He will not play the same role as Steve Rogers. Unlike most other Marvel superheroes, Sam Wilson did not have superpowers. That was an important aspect of the character, as Captain America represents an ordinary person who rises to become extraordinary even without the use of a Super Soldier Serum.
First introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the public has fallen in love with Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff. Initially a supporting character, Wanda’s popularity quickly grew everywhere Captain America: Civil War and two extra avengers movies, which culminated in her starring role in WandaVision† She has proven beyond doubt to be the mightiest Avenger, striking fear into the heart of Agatha Harkness as the Scarlet Witch. The Marvel fandom has recognized Wanda as a fan-favorite character, and it wasn’t hard to see her play an important role in the future of the MCU. But due to certain events in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessWanda is unlikely to become a leader of the MCU. At least, certainly not in the same way Captain America and Iron Man led the Infinity Saga.
Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers)
Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, previously called Captain Marvel the MCU’s “strongest character” in an interview with Vulture† That’s not a surprising reaction when Carol Danvers has powers derived from an Infinity Stone. But lately Feige seems to be more focused on recognizing Wanda Maximoff as the most powerful Avenger. Nevertheless, regardless of Captain Marvel’s current power rankings, Feige has called her the “new face and leader of the Marvel Cinematic Universe”.
Captain Marvel only met the other Avengers in Avengers: Endgame, a film in which she had minimal screen time. But she has stood as the obvious leader of the Avengers that Marvel has set up for when the team reforms. After all, Nick Fury named the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes team after the call sign of Danvers’ Air Force. Before the Avengers finally reunite, Carol Danvers will join forces with Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan (aka Ms. Marvel) in the miracles†
The Infinity Saga (Phases One to Three) revolved heavily around the Infinity Stones. With the Stones destroyed, the MCU has since shifted its focus to the Multiverse. The superhero most associated with the Multiverse is none other than Doctor Strange. There is no other character more suited to introducing the Multiverse than the former Sorcerer Supreme. Spider-Man: No Way Home was the first to crack open the Multiverse, but that was just the beginning.
Per IGN, Kevin Feige has said that Doctor Strange is “the anchor of the Marvel Cinematic Universe”. He was the one who looked into the future and paved the way for the Avengers’ victory against Thanos. Even after the Infinity Saga, Doctor Strange is still one of the characters with the biggest impact on the wider MCU. He has also served as the character that best represents the franchise’s themes as the MCU ventures into a stranger and more mystical territory.
